I started freelancing by accident, then turned my side-hustle into a reliable six-figure income.
I started freelancing in 2009 by accident. It was during my first year of college that I fell in love with creating websites.
That same year, I discovered that people were willing to pay for websites from individuals like me, not just established businesses.
So, I did work for anyone who was willing to hire me. My first projects were free or cheap. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was a freelancer.
To be honest, things were pretty sloppy. I fumbled through every freelance project learning along the way. I had no idea what to charge or how to talk to clients. Every project was a learning experience.
I charged way too little and I was flat out rejected for wanting to charge more. I fired clients and had clients fire me. Sometimes I took on projects that I didn’t even know how to finish, hoping that I could learn along the way and earn a paycheck.
Sometimes I worked 18-20 hour days for weeks on end and slept in the computer lab. I was constantly doing freelance work on the side – in addition to my course work.
For four years I fought through my inexperience and forged a path that earned me about… $10,000.
That’s not enough to live on, so…
I got a salary job like everyone else.
I was addicted to being my own boss, but the thought of freelancing full-time never crossed my mind. I got a salary job at a design agency that I loved and continued freelancing on nights and weekends.
I had a nagging feeling that working 9-5 for the next 40 years just wasn’t for me.
But that job meant I had no risk as a freelancer. So, I experimented with higher rates, better proposals, and I was constantly working on improving my website.
After annual redesigns of my portfolio website (sound familiar?), I finally published a version that focused on my clients and their needs rather than how awesome my work was.
That was the pivotal decision that kickstarted my freelancing career. I started gaining real momentum and getting regular organic leads.
It was never my plan to become a full-time freelancer until 2015 (7 years after I began) when my annual freelance income actually exceeded my salary.
I was actually making more money by freelancing on nights and weekends than I was working 40-50 hours a week at my day job.
That’s when I decided to make the transition into full-time freelancing and I instantly doubled my income. I successfully built a healthy and sustainable freelance career and quit my 9-5 job with confidence and minimal risk.
